PRESS RELEASE
THE DEMOCRACY MOVEMENT CALLS FOR A “DAYLIGHT VIGIL FOR A HUMANITARIAN OUTCOME” IN THE CASE OF OVER 3,000 CUBANS CURRENTLY STUCK IN COSTA RICA AFTER THE GOVERNMENT OF NICARAGUA USED ITS ARMY TO VIOLENTLY PREVENT THEIR PATH THROUGH THAT COUNTRY IN THEIR WAY TO THE UNITED STATES WHERE MANY HAVE RELATIVES.
THE VIGIL WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE SAME TIME THAT CHANCELORS FROM SEVERAL LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES MEET IN EL SALVADOR IN SEARCH OF A SOLUTION TO THE CRISIS.
MIAMI, November 23rd, 2015 – The Democracy Movement will conduct a Daylight Vigil for a Humanitarian Outcome of the migration crisis involving over 3,000 Cubans who left their country due to the hopelessness instilled in them by the lack of economic, political and human rights that exists in the country and the unwillingness of the Cuban Government to introduce changes in their system that could return the hope to its own people that they can someday live with dignity in their own nation.
The Vigil will begin at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 in front of the Consulate of Nicaragua, located at 1332 West Flagler Street in Miami, Florida.
We hope that any solution to the crisis will put human rights first as Costa Rica has done in spite of the fact that it is a small nation and therefore lacks abundant resources to deal with the difficult task of handling the current crisis and safeguarding human rights at the same time.
Also, the Democracy Movement will publish an Open Letter to the Chancellors of the Americas In Regards to The Humanitarian Crisis of the Cuban Refugees clarifying some facts and concepts about the Cuban Exodus and the Cuban Adjustment Act and asking them to advocate for a solution based on the roots of the problem and not only its symptoms.
The letter will also alert them that closing the land route for the Cuban migrants could increase the exodus through the ocean thereby leading to more death. Therefore, a responsible and well thought solution is mandatory in the case at hand.
Relatives of the Cubans in Costa Rica will be present during the Vigil.
